I think it's moreso referring to how unique CD sprites look, such as how Sonic appears in the Special Stages, for example.
Well you see metal sonic in the original game uses a shading style similar to sonic and the sonic 1 badniks, there is also another shading style in cd specifically for badniks or robots which i applied in here. You can try comparing him to R1's Tamabboh badnik and R5's Sasori badnik.
Oh I know, it's just confusing
Nothing's stopping others from trying their own hand at making already-existing characters in a game's style (just look at all of the SMB1-styled sheets we have of Mario, for example).
