Jan 14, 2025 11:06 PM Yawackhary Asset: Menu Sounds like a classic case of Sega rushing out yet another game... At least for the original US/JP version. It wasn't that Sega added Super Monaco GP but rather disabled the game from the menu. The data is already on the disc along with the menu icon and palettes. Along with the menu music being too quiet, I wonder whether Sega did release a beta version as a final. Someone should really disassemble the code to see why SMGP got disabled (and whether Golden Axe can get fixed for 2 Players).

Since the Mega CD had a late release in PAL regions, it meant that the finished game was able to get released and an excuse to re-release the game in the US.

Jan 14, 2025 8:36 PM Yawackhary Game: Toy Story @Chipper_52 They aren't... Just by comparing the idle animation and crouch sprites, neither the Mega Drive or the SNES version are a match. They look similar but when you look closer, the pixels are at different positions. That's already discounting palettes. Also I don't know why but despite the lower palette count, the MD version seems a bit more detailed?

It's like they were based off the same render but the conversion and the touch up are different. Credits aren't much help as most of them are the same between the two versions.

@Its-A-Me_Austin @VTN-RIPPER Sadly, the game might have a rights issue. Sure Disney Interactive was involved but so was Psygnosis who became Studio Liverpool and is a part of Sony. Plus Sony has rights to many of Psygnosis published games such as Lemmings and Shadow of the Beast, also why Mickey Mania hasn't got a re-release since the European PSN release of Mickey's Wild Adventure (the attempted US release back in 2012 was cancelled due to 50hz issues). It doesn't affect the GB or the PC versions though, neither would a remake.

Once as many of the current fantasy rebirths are done, I'll be stepping back for a while again. Yukkuri sprite sheets made this update take longer than I wanted. The page now has every character in LW Global, and using stuff from JP I have parts of the next update ready as they release in Global. I hope everyone enjoys what's here now.
Jan 14, 2025 6:52 PM Yawackhary Asset: Woody @Son1c The sprites are not designed in a way that can be zipped. Many early consoles and handhelds up to and in some cases including the DS were tile based and not image based. This means that the sprites are split upon 8x8 (or more) chunks and often a tile gets reused. All down to saving space in the ROM, same with compression, split into pieces and sometimes not even 8x8 at all. The game programming assembles the sprites, which is why capturing is easier than ripping directly from the ROM because the tiles don't always assemble neatly.

That's why most early console games have their sprites on a sheet, sometimes just the ONE sheet covers nearly everything if it's really old or basic. You might get something like the Amiga/Atari ST computers where you can extract the base .lbm or .pic files from game, a couple of Mega Drive games do use Amiga format files. One 32X game and a couple of GBA games even have JPEGs (no joke). These tend to be rare. So yeah, zipping isn't possible unlike modern console rips and many computer and mobile rips.
