Trying to re-rip this, but I'm having trouble figuring out where the puff under the splash, above the map screen poof, and left of the bubble/tornado particles is used.
EDIT: Found it, it's one of four possible waterfall-on-head effects.

OK, I'm seven years too late to be answering @theFlarbar, but for anyone else who was wondering: When you're a reasonable distance away from a pad, its model gets swapped out with a flat texture applied to the ground where it used to be.

Mario and Luigi actually didn't use the same walk cycle as they did in the final game, but instead reused the body sprites from Family Basic.
Yes, I will be commenting this on every prototype Mario sprite sheet that reuses the final game's walk cycle

If you output an image with a different color palette, cut out the background from that image, and then overlay an image output with the normal palette, it will be cut correctly and become transparent.
