@EmRuHire: Rather, "What are Tockles" in this case, but anyway they're the little multi-coloured blobby guys from the Dragon Quest series, in particular Dragon Quest XI (S), they also appear in the Yggdrasil's Altar stage in SSBU. The (oddly-later-than-the-rest) spirit here is obtained from playing said game. |

And the funny thing is, there is a badger youkai known as the Mujina. Japan does indeed have a native species of badger, and yes it's easy to confuse them with a tanuki. |

@Dolphman I think Lovecraft is plenty represented in games these days. Call of Cthulhu (I really don't like how they just called it that, with not subtitle whatsoever) is pretty recent and got quite some attention and just recently Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones came out. And those are just recent ones, that are straight up Cthulhu games, lots of other games have Lovecraft elements, whether as cameo or integrated in the plot, like Dusk. |
