Most of the boss could be put on the background layer, and the only part of it that overlaps with the background, its fin, could be recreated with sprites, maybe you could even change the background color per scanline to replace some background tiles, resulting in even less overlap. There would still be a lot of flicker, of course. |

wild how this game was the last to use this design for the dry bones, both for the Paper Mario series and the Mario series as a whole |

@TomAndTheCats green Deep Cheeps didn't appear in SMB1, I'll add them to my sheet once I make SMB3 enemies |

Does Vinny really count as "reoccurring"? He appeared in 2 1/2 episodes like they said below and also had a few cameos. Maybe put him in like "side" characters. |

I wonder if the SMB1 Koopa Troopa would look like as an improved NES-style version. I like it btw! |

I see there's a right-side Survival lifebar; is that actually used anywhere in-game? (Survival can't be played in multiplayer, is there anywhere else it is used?) |

@Yawackhary I wonder what's preventing the PC port from getting rereleased? The Whole Can O' Worms ports of both games are buggy and inferior despite the impressive redrawn graphics. (One of the main problems with the compilation is the fact they're missing levels and other things from the originals) |

Not to be confused with the Princess Kurumi from Ninja Princess. |

These sprites look like either parodies you would see in cartoons or the original NES commercials that tried to recreate the graphics. I like em either way. |
Oct 22, 2022, 7:26 PM | Yawackhary | Sheet: Enemies |
@Barrett I don't get what you mean... If it's about the 64 tile limit for sprites that only applies in game (and not the ROM), then it is either well designed to make sure that there is some breathing space or more commonly it drops tiles once it gets to that limit. When you see parts of the sprite flash or even sprites themselves flash, it is called sprite flicker. The NES does suffer from sprite flicker, so does the Master System, even the Genesis and the SNES it can happen. There are a few ways of getting around this, you could have some of or most of the sprites be part of the background. It is usually used in bosses but is also used in a few Master System games on the cost... of... making... the... game... run... really... slow... Also not all of them on the sheet is on the screen at a time, you generally only get a few enemies and bullets or just seeing one of the larger enemies. Due to the limitations of the NES and the game like most NES games has to use a mapper to get around the 40kb memory limit, the game is constantly adding and removing tiles. You usually don't see sprites get added (unless you go into another room and the enemies pop up) but you do see them getting removed when you kill enemies, bullets disappear or blocks where they break away. If it's about all of the sprites on the sheet. Well... Tiles get reused, they can also be horizontally or vertically flipped meaning that it wouldn't take up as much space in the ROM. Also Mega Man 6 is a late NES game so it would have had a larger cartridge, so late that it never officially came out in PAL regions. Looking into the ROM and Capcom was sloppy wasting quite a bit of space (lots of blank space, square blocks, checkered blocks, mentions of ZAKO, all not used in game, even a bit of leftover Japanese, probably enough space to squeeze another level or two actually)... |

@Dolphman I think it's all down to not having the source code or the materials (or couldn't be bothered emulating the Mega CD since it's a bit trickier than just the Mega Drive). Outside of the Mega CD, only the PC got the Special Edition and even then the PC also got a non-SE port yet retaining the music (was it the Can O' Worms pack or something?). Most ports, emulation or the HD remake seem to reference either the Mega Drive or the SNES versions, more so on the latter. Then again most of these were cash grabs anyway... |
