Nov 13, 2022, 4:46 PM | Yawackhary | Game: Osutchi Mesutchi Masutāmaindo |
@bluecake It really does vary. Some games on the site have a fully translated name, some if it's a licensed game would use the English name, some use the English name even if that version is Japanese only (e.g. Trails of Mana, the GBA Phoenix Wright games) and others use the Japanese name to certain degrees of romanization. Do you have the original Japanese name? My hunch if it is katakana it's suppose to be Mastermind. Considering that there's a good chance that it's a licensed game based on the board game... |

Are English words within Japanese titles usually written in English on this site? If so then the game title should be Osutchi Mesutchi Mastermind (Masutāmaindo is the romanized version). |

The GRANDEST game known to man... |
Nov 13, 2022, 11:35 AM | Yawackhary | Game: Labyrinth: Maze of the Goblin King (JPN) |
@EvilMariobot A lot of it is down to licensing rights. The publisher often only had the rights for their own country whether it was down to costs since global is more expensive, licensor restrictions, on platforms that just didn't exist in the US (JP - PC-88, MSX, Sharp X1, UK/EUR - Spectrum, Amstrad) or just don't have the facilities. In this case Tokuma Shoten never published a game outside of Japan and people really only known them for being involved with the Studio Ghibli movies, even then the likes of Streamline, Miramax and Disney were bringing those out in the US. Also back then Japan really did like Hollywood movies. This would have meant that another publisher in the US would have brought out the game but due to the 5 game limit on the NES, they had to be very picky and think of the cost. The latter was probably why Konami couldn't bring out the first Goonies game and probably their Ultra Games allotment that they did was also full (Konami were really prolific back then doing 3 platforms - arcade, NES and MSX). If it was a choice between publishing Labyrinth or an original game that didn't need to pay licensing fees, they would choose the original game unless they know that it'll be a profitable hit. Sometimes it's a free for all like with Rambo with Pack in Video, Acclaim, Sega and Ocean all having rights to bring out games based on First Blood Part 2 (Sega, Ocean and Taito also had Rambo 3). Since Labyrinth didn't do well in the US box office, it would have put off any releases of the game and the NES was a mess distribution wise in Europe otherwise it would have got localised (Labyrinth did really well in the UK but the Spectrum game where it was the most popular computer at the time was cancelled...). Chances are that Activision may have considered since they published the C64 and Apple II game but we don't know. |

Nov 13, 2022, 10:46 AM | Morhamms357 | Game: Captain Tsubasa (JPN) |
It is, but that game also doesn't have any sprites. I'm considering ripping my own since I'm knowledgeable about these games, but I don't know how to rip the sprites as of now (without literally screenshotting it and cleaning it up afterward) |
Nov 13, 2022, 10:42 AM * | Morhamms357 | Sheet: Glass Joe |
Glass Joe actually has a dodge sprite that, of course, not many people have seen. It's not unused, though. Search "Glass Joe Dodge" and you should be able to find it, or just try and keep throwing Star Punches at him and you'll be able to see it on the 5th one or so. Not just that, but he (and Don Flamenco) each have unique sprites for their stomach knockout, so that's also something to look into. Edit: Revised the sheet and added the sprites. Edit 2: Wow, this is a crazy new revision! This is so much more accurate with the coloring and tiles than the old one. Love the entire rehaul to the game! |
