There are actually 2 VS Modes: "Hitori De Taisen" (Play against a Computer) and "Futari De Taisen" (1st Player against a 2nd Player).
Interestingly, these are some of the only sprites to have differences in the Neo-Geo version (compared to B-System's) -- they halved the resolution of the middle four tile columns to accommodate the slightly smaller screen width.
