They are normal maps or bump maps. The simpliest app I know to merge it with normal sprites is puzzle.exe, extension to Miyamoto! (NSMBU tilesets actually can have normal maps)
how do you merge the "rainbow-colored" with the sprites though?
@Klaty: Those are the "bump" maps, they give the sprites their detail and shading ingame.
May I ask what the rainbow-colored version one is for?
