What is the X used for? And is the Smash symbol the one used in multi-man/team battles? It seems to look different than it does in-game, maybe that's just a transparency effect interacting with the stuff around it?

no, its just showing his different skins outside of just color for fur.
The color bar is representing his cuff color.
