I like how the last 3rd unused sprite is designed in such a way that it looks like Mario is holding up the middle finger.
All I want for Christmas is the small/big swimming 2nd sprites which don't exist

just so you know, the unused thing is from earlier in development when mario had his modern outfit in smb1
Is it just me or Mario Tennis appears to reference the unused pallete swap of mario at one point (i don't remember the game it happens in)

@Robot Mario I'm just guessing...but...Mario Bros. COULD have been unlockable, just like The Lost Levels in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe.
I think the unused sprites may have been used for an unused Mario Bros. (Battle Mode) minigame.
