that probably uses multiple clever tricks taking advantage of the hardware that either the developers couldn't get working or were undiscovered.
https://shc.zone/entries/contest2024/1117 play the special stage in this hack
like I just said, they were based off of 3D renders. the genesis can't run real-time full-scale FMV; thus they had to downscale the resolution.
the special stages are too small to be prendered
the first major use was in fact sonic 3, but sonic 2's corkscrews in emerald hill and the crisscross cage thingies were pre-rendered.
on second thought, they weren't pre-rendered; they were hand-made but based off of 3D renders. I believe it was the same for the special stages, hence why they have basically no shading.

if youre refereing to the corkscrew sprites, im pretty sure they arent, i mean, look at the smoothness of the prototype walk cycles.
as far as im aware, the first use / major use of rendering was sonic 3. big asf sonic render

I wouldn't say they look perfect...
in hindsight, they're obviously not pre-rendered. I think the first use of pre-rendered graphics was in sonic 2.

pre rendering wouldnt look so perfect
well, yeah, I know that. I do 3D rendering myself. it's just that pre-rendered sprites usually have a lot of frames.
The number of animation frames a sprite has and whether or not the sprite was pre-rendered have nothing to do with each other. You can have a pre-rendered sprite with a small number of frames. See Super Mario RPG (SNES) for loads of examples.
Is it known if the big ring frames are pre-rendered? I would assume not, as it only has 4 frames.
I know this won't be updated, but the Robotnik monitor thing is seen in Debug Mode in some specific areas while going through the object list. IIRC, areas where you can't place Sonic in which zip him off if you do
I Needed this, TYSM
@maxgammer2014 In the 2011/origins remasters yes but not in the genesis original.
the "S" Monitor is in debug
@funny words magic man Those spinning sprites look more like a mixture of the Sonic and Eggman images to simulate fast spinning, which is probably why there is so much dithering on top of it, most likely to hide it. I'm not sure, I'm not a smart person.
Where's the other sonic goal post sprites? Why are the only spinning ones robotnik?
if anybody was wonder (and nobody probably is) the bumper sprites are in the spring yard objects sheet
just realized eggman doesn't have his little yellow things on him on the signpost
I know which one you're asking about and it's not a thing in-game, thus not happening. It's not hard though to stitch it together for yourself.
