I had these prepared months in advance. As mentioned before, this is one of those that had trouble dumping, but the initial broken dump did have the graphical assets intact. These were ripped way back in March :p
This rip is in that rare category of rips you can hear.
I literally just finished ripping Sonic's sprites myself to find that these were already uploaded to the spriters resource lol.
The lead of the team that dumped this visited m1crowave's place in person and he allowed them to dump his protos.
This happened to be one of those that had some trouble, so it took longer than usual to get out. The ROM header does not define the right size for the cartridge, so the dumper only dumped half of the cartridge. After some modifications to the dumper, a second visit was done and the full cartridge was dumped.

So it turns out that Sonic didn't have a creepy open-mouth smile, but instead it was just terrible shading haha.
I guess it makes sense, since this was only for testing stuff, and wasn't meant to be seen by the public

I was waiting for this, thank you. Also I think the unused Pallete was meant to be just for Sonic, maybe the screen only had him at some point.
speaking of bad shading, there are 3 colours used for sonic's quills, however the 2 darkest shades look almost identical. I made the last shade darker to show this off better

Yeah, I agree. They should've used a lighter tan for the darkest shade of tan, it almost looks dark red.

As shown on the sheet, there is an unused palette. This palette has lighter contrast for the muzzle shading, showing it is in fact shading.
That's because he's sleeping.
I think that's supposed to be shading looking at it a little bit more
