@Doc: Even then, I assume people back then thought it was just some made-up word for that game. I wasn't even alive during the 90s until the very last year of that decade, so I can't really speak for everyone.
And the funny thing is, there is a badger youkai known as the Mujina. Japan does indeed have a native species of badger, and yes it's easy to confuse them with a tanuki.
Except SMB3 was already out.
@DigitalDiamal: I mean, this was a 90s localization. Nobody outside Japan knew what the frick a tanuki was during that time.
