It just sucks that the way they did it was making them (especially luigi) much brighter, and making that lighting too smooth
They look like plastic (and other similar materials) like ew

The Macintosh ran at a higher native resolution than DOS, so graphics were usually upscaled to their proper size and touched up to varying degrees of effectiveness.
