the sprites that are outlined instead of having a black background are platformer face sprites, they're outlined so that they can look good on the new text box's transparent background.

there are even duplicates of Ralsei's portraits with outlines for platformer mode, they're called spr_dw_fcastle_top_ascent_ralseiface and're used for the little blurb reactions that happens when Susie is asking for Ralsei to go faster at the top of the castle.

what's interesting is that the portraits for Ralsei's expressions while Yellow is continuously trying to off himself are outlined... I wonder if these were supposed to be used in platformer mode earlier in development?
