It looks for all the world to me like sprites intended to be a teleport-in animation for the old lost soul (or "ghoul") enemy. Like the "ghoul" is supposed to be emerging from hellfire, but the effect didn't quite work out.

Then compare with the lost soul emerging from inside the Pain Elemental's mouth, and it's clear that this animation was used as the basis for the inside of the Pain Elemental's mouth.
