Why could this game be a prequel? Well, that's my theory, because James has a wife named Maria, and in Demon Hunter Legend 1, James the Count mentions Maria. ,What James wanted in this game was to defeat Count for Maria's sake, which strongly reinforces that this game is a prequel.
Fun fact: James turns into a boss in Demon Hunter Legends 2 https://www.spriters-resource.com/mobile/demonhuntlgnd/sheet/44616/
