While it's not the biggest background in the franchise, you do spend a lot of time indoors in Marble Zone, so the background was designed to match/exceed the size of the length of the level. Aquatic Ruin in 2 also does this, to the point that parts of its backgrounds cannot wrap/loop because their lengths just stop.
