He has succumbed to the darkness, which was later revealed to be the case in the follow-up game Symphony of the Night. Maria is more of a "What-If" scenario and her pure heart managed to purify the land, not just defeating Dracula.
Cool! I always found it strange how the castle never collapses in Richter’s ending, while Maria sees it fall in hers.
