“Ok a Hellknight, I can take tha-Oh god that’s a Baron of Hell!” - Doomers everywhere
Aside from that, it's used where red and blue meet (Light Amplification Goggles, Partial Invisibility, W65B_2/FIREBLU2), inbetween the legs of Wolfenstein SS in the second frame of its firing animation (left over from Wolf3D's index 255, a magenta shade that represents negative space), and a single pixel of patch W94_1 (one of the techwalls). Oh, and some prototype stuff (some sign textures and the early projectile sprites from the id Vault). Probably some console port exclusive stuff, too.
Thank you!!
For one, that's magenta, not purple. It's actually quite rare in Doom's graphics, with its most notable appearances being the aura around a Cacodemon projectile and Commander Keen's shirt.
What are those five shades of purple used for?
Close, but no. These use the Deluxe Paint II palette (NoS replacing colors 0-55 and 160-175). Doom uses DPaintII's red, and modified versions of gray & brown. It's quite common to see DOS games use bits and pieces of this palette. Hell, Wolfenstein 3D (Doom's immediate precursor) uses a modified DPaintII palette.
Also Used in Nerves of Steel (urhere.pal) too
Kinda Also used in:
* Quiver (1997; Modified, The Palette Looked Same)
* A.D. Cop (Modified, Color Table Was Modified)
* Captain Wayne: Vacation Desperation (Heavily Modified)

oh so thats why the barons look like hell knights from afar

@16-bit Globe Literally the day after I made that comment I saw the file in SLADE lol XD
@MG12 the palette is stored as PLAYPAL in the iwad, yes

Is this actually in the game files or just for reference?
Corrections to my previous comment:
* The first line of Yellow is meant to fade into the last 4 shades of Red while also fading from the first 4 shades of the second set of Yellow.
* Blue wasn't "recycled" from Wolf3D, since it has a much sharper decline (going all the way from 255 to 0 in 16 colors rather than Wolf3D's 255 to 64). That being said, it's the same pure blue (with Red and Green having values of 0)

y'know it's weird that they'd put so many browns on there and yet there's no dark reds (or at least reds that are dark enough for the colormap)
wolf3d blue is different, its more cyan in wolf
the yellow going brown is likely for gold object
that is a lot of browns actually jfc

That and the really weird color choices.
* Cramming little bits of other colors in the top and bottom
* Egregious number of different browns
* Yellow going from eye-searingly bright to weirdly orange-brown
* Recycling Wolf3D's cartoony blue instead of something more natural
* Having multiple shades of super-dark blue when nothing else gets that dark
* A grand total of *5* purples
