Petie
Hey everyone! I feel like it's been quite a while since I've done one of these so I'm here to bring you just over 800 new sheets this week!

With so much new content, it's going to be tough to highlight individuals but I suppose a good place to start is with the customs. There are a bunch of new Mario customs among a handful of others for a total of 41 new submissions to the section this week which is always awesome to see!

Outside of the custom section, there's obviously plenty more so let's get started. The DS / DSi gets 105 new submissions with a ton from Castlevania (thanks to rufaswan's continued efforts) and also a bunch from Mario & Luigi: Bowswer's Inside Story (courtesy of Greiga Master and our very own Ton), and a few more from Super Robot Wars W and Kingdom Hearts to round everything out. Kingdom Hearts also appears in our mobile section (mayphelion) alongside Professor Layton (Luna16) and lots more so there's plenty to see there as well! And to finish off this random selection, the Nintendo Switch sees submissions to four of its games this week - Cadence of Hyrule (brought to us by RTB and Dazz), Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Dakress), Paper Mario: The Origami King (courtesy of a variety of people), and one more submission to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for quite the showing this week as well! That's really just a small sampling of what this update has to offer though so be sure to check out what interests you and perhaps pass on a thank you to those who ripped it!

Before I go though, I do want to quickly cover one important event that just recently happened. As I'm sure many of you are already aware, a large amount of confidential and sensitive data from Nintendo was recently leaked. This may sound hypocritical coming from us given the nature of the content on this site but we can't support or participate in the large-scale theft of intellectual property so we will not be accepting any submissions from this leaked data. It wasn't just images that were released - the full source code of various games and a bunch of other internal-only data is now out there and that goes way beyond what we do here, especially since many of those games are still available for purchase in one form or another directly from Nintendo. So, out of respect for their works as well as our time and yours, please do not submit anything obtained from these files - it will be rejected on-sight.

On that note though, that does it for this week's update! Be sure to check in next week for updates on all four sites and in the meantime, enjoy your weekend!

Edit: Because this has apparently gone wildly off the rails, let me make one thing crystal clear. Not accepting content from these leaks is not a moral issue. Respect for the private information included in the leak may be a small component here but the reality is, this data was obtained through a targeted and overtly illegal attack on Nintendo's servers and there is nothing gray about it. When I said we can't participate in large-scale theft, that's what I was referring to - the incredibly illegal nature of how this data was obtained. Nintendo has already been removing the content from other sites which should be evidence enough that it was a good call, for legal reasons, to not upload it here. Morality was never my primary reason for refusing this content - it was just a bonus at that point.

How about tutorials are how to rip from the source code so people can rip it themselves don't have to rely on the vg resource

@Petie I already edit it for clarification. I never wanted to spread rumors, just a give a very good reason why we should never support Hackers like them to begin with.

That and we could attract more legal eagles from Nintendo, if we hasn't already.

Let’s perhaps avoid pushing baseless theories as fact? There is no evidence, as far as I’m aware, to suggest that the leaked assets are a coverup for the stolen data. First of all, we already know about the breach because Nintendo, as required by law, reported it. Second, the kind of people (i.e. law-enforcement) investigating the breach would not be distracted by video game data.

I'm know I'm late for this, but keep in mind that the prototypes we obtained in the past were likely from auctions, or from the developers themselves out of generosity. The leaks this summer were obtained from thief on Nintendo's servers, could very well be an attempt to mine user's account data (like your address, card numbers, etc.); with the prototypes being used to distract the public (especially game enthusiast). And that, I think, is the bottom line here: they may have already have our private information from that hack. And, for that, we have to pretend those findings never existed until either the prototypes were gifted to us by Nintendo and their staff or when the prototypes were obtained through auctions like the rest.

Hacking servers are a criminal offense since they're viewing information that could be used to harm the livelihood of others. As much as I appreciate those findings and sprites, I can't support the men behind it since they could've obtained my credit card information.

edit: This is only a hunch and is no way based off of any legal or official evidences behind the Breach on Nintendo servers. The point is that breaching well guarded servers without the owners consent is dangerous as it supports crimes like Identity theft and such.

@AFruitday! Well, it looks like the drama is starting to go away right now. I don't think there's been a debate today

This is my last comment on this post. I hope the drama goes away, really soon. And i'm sorry if I wasn't helping anyone.

@Tsukiyomaru0 This wouldn't be the first time. You should have seen what happened a few years ago when there was a thread on the forums called "The Male Gaze"

Are custom models based off of the leaks allowed? Some of the sprites for Super Mario World look awesome, and I think they would look great in 3D. Of course, that's just me.

I think my example of an employee releasing it with permission probably wasn’t the best but releasing after an NDA expires is likely a bit more accurate. My point is just that a leak doesn’t need to be illegal though.

@Petie
So when John Romero posted those unused beta sprites of Doom It Is considered a leak
I Always had the impression that leak=Getting information from a company without their consent
Thanks for clearing It out

@Kendotlibero That's not necessarily true. Accidental leaks by the company itself or an employee of the company releasing previously unreleased data with the company's permission (or after something like an NDA expired) would both be examples of legal leaks. Gray area leaks would be something like getting your hands on a dev kit that was sold without permission (as long as you're not the one buying it initially) and then dumping information from it. Maybe illegal in the sense that it shouldn't have been sold but you purchased it from a reseller so you didn't technically commit a crime (unless you knew it was stolen at the time which is difficult to prove). This particular leak was not a gray area though - Nintendo's systems were illegally accessed by an outside party to gain access to data not meant for the public and that's why our stance is what it is here.

@Petie Every leak Is illegal by definition
But I stand with you guys to not post this particular leak for having private conversations
P.S: can this site Stay a single month without a major drama? Oh My God people reacted in such an angry way for not wanting to host some beta Bing Bing wahoo for ethical reasons

In many cases, leaks don't have a defined source. In this case, we know very well that a hack into Nintendo's servers was used to illegally acquire this data. Because we know the source and know it was illegal, it makes this situation different than other leaks. We'd respond the same for any other leaked confirmed to be illegal in nature.

@Petie @SharkGuy Ah, I see. Thanks for answering my last question!

Another quick question is, how was it "stolen"? Was it apart of the leaks that have been going on for a while? Technically, wouldn't every prototype be considered stolen if it was taken from Nintendo somehow? I'm so confused about everything that I don't know what is fine anymore. ?

@Spritz first off, thanks for the free promo

Second, custom spritework based on this leaked data is allowed, complete recreations of said data isn't

And the issue with the Spaceworld page is that none of us knew how it was obtained, and after research it turned out it was stolen like this leak

Customs inspired by leaked designs should be fine but no aspect of the leaked data can be used - it has to be 100% custom.

@DioShiba I wanted to avoid drama in the BLM post alright. I apologize if I didn't help in this debate. I own that responsibility. I wanted to give out advice for people going crazy over what they can't post or have.

Just a quick question but if the main reason for not posting the leaked stuff on here is for legal reasons, are we allowed to make custom sprites based off of leaked designs?

Ex. https://www.spriters-resource.com/custom_edited/pokemoncustoms/sheet/136522/ (This is a cool sprite-sheet, by the way.)

I would find it very useful if we had a list of things we COULD do with the leak and the stuff we COULDN'T do with the leak, because this is confusing! ?

Also, no more Gold and Silver 1997 Spaceworld page..? We haven't gotten in trouble before for having it up atleast for what I know, but if you must. ?

P.S. I apologize if I sound childish at times, I'm just very, very confused about everything.

@AFruitaday! What the fuck?

No one is going to say that you are racist just for comparing the intensity of the debate here to the BLM one.

I get what you are saying but this comment isn't going to help anyone here. I don't even know why you thought that would contribute anything.

Oh My Goodness. Once again, the comment section here is becoming like when Petie said to stand up against police brutality in a post after Ton posted Black Lives Matter. Before you attack and be unkind to me, let me say that I'M NOT RACIST. PERIOD. I understand that the police can be bad but without law enforcement, there would be no society. The same thing can be with Happiness, Kindness, and peace. And to the other people who complain about this. Please, calm it down. You're excited about these unused gfx from these prototypes (SAME with me too!), but you can't go bombard the admins with comments that doesn't help anything. Besides, why not go rip sprites from other obscure companies?
