@Super Phanto Regardless of how spiriting works, spriting is at least a little different :V

You know what the best part about spiriting is? You can use any tool you want! With that said, let's all just agree to disagree on this topic, as opposed to flooding the comments section.

Personally, I use MSPaint for most of my 2D graphics editing, period. There are very few exceptions, and they are always for something transparent. MSPaint's main advantage is that it is perfect for working on a micro scale; it is very, very precise, and it doesn't use blurring or transparency for most of the basic shapes, (although it does for the brushes,) and thus you can simply make sprites with well-defined edges, something very important when you very rarely work with transparency.

@Super Phanto you don't need transparency when doing spriting unless you're working specifically to emulate a high-ish power system. Mybe in texturing, but not so much in spriting. Not to mention it's needlessly hard to flip or scale selections in Paint.net exactly without messing with the whole layer, which adds about 5 extra clicks in and of itself.

@Doc von Shmeltwick: but thats 3 clicks per shade vs. 1 click per shade. Also, MS paint can't handle transparent color.

@Doc von Schmeltwick Alternatively, you can select the color you wanna change and right-click with the eraser tool to replace the first color with the eraser/secondary color.
I use that a lot and it's extremely useful.

@Super Phanto Problem with Paint.net for spriting is that you still have to draw a frame most times for doing things, and the "single pixel" tool on it is just plain awful, so it necessitates a lot of unnecessary steps for relatively small and simple raster graphics that are a non-issue in MS Paint. And changing the colors of a whole sheet in MS Paint is easy, you just change the back swatch the the color you want to change and place the sheet over an area with the color you want, which takes roughly 3 clicks per shade.

Personally, I use Paint.net for my spriting. It's not quite Photoshop, But it sure as hell ain't MS Paint. One thing I like about Paint.net is the ability to change the paint bucket tool's flood mode from "contiguous" to "global" and vise versa. Contiguous is just like MS Paint. Global, however, paints every instance of the color it is used on in the layer you have selected. For example, recoloring the entire Knuckles sprite sheet from Sonic 3 to be blue in Contiguous mode would take forever! However, with Global, you can do the same in just a few clicks.
@Akira Acually, no, he didn't.

I love MS Paint. But I mostly use the app GraphicsGale. :1

MS Paint is pretty great for spriting. Straightforward, not a lot of gimmicks, but solid for what it is.

Per Dolphman. Insulting one of the main programs used for a subject, on a site dedicated to said subject, is not a good way to make friends.

FYI. The majority of custom sprites here, including mine, are all done in MS Paint.
Just because it looks awful, doesn't mean it's because of a popular art program.
In fact, this Sonic was made awful on purpose. That's the joke behind it.

Because everybody but you knows it's awful for spriting.
