RE: Seperating beginners from the rest.
I think this is a solid idea on paper. The actual result will probably lead to extreme levels of competition between beginners who will want their "upgrade" to Experienced, not to mention it'll be pretty complicated to sort things out - it's extremely subjective and could potentially hurt feelings.

Seems unnecessary. People will be asses to newbies no matter how separated they are. I'm led to believe that's obvious after the years I have spent with the community, anyway.

Keep reading, bookworm.

Actually, I've seen the system work reasonably well on another site, dealing with animation.
Besides, the current system obviously has its problems, and this new system offers a promise of a fix. I'd say it's worth the attempt; if it makes things worse, or just doesn't fix the problem, then we can always switch back.
The years you've spent with the community have been while it was under the current system, not this new system - how, then, do you know if your statement there is true?
I'm not trying to make a big argument here, I'm just saying we should at least try it.

RE: Seperating beginners from the rest.
I just feel like it could lead to further problems. I don't understand, either, why separating beginners from experienced spriters will cease trolling. Since experienced spriters will be the ones giving tips to beginners, in the end the whole "it's fat" instead of "it's fat, maybe try reducing the width by 2 pixels" will still continue happening.

I'm not against trying it, but I'm skeptic as to how it will change things at all.

I really like this idea and I support it. Alot of the beginners that I have seen are quite cocky and think they're better than everyone here.
It's about time something like this was thought of. Good job, Dazz.

Yeah. People who don't want to see minor work can easily stay out and those who actually want to help others getting better can go in.
You've got my support on this idea.

RE: Seperating beginners from the rest.
Perhaps to prevent those cocky beginners from posting where they please we should just have a restricted "Expert Spriters" forum that that new members can't post in until proven that they are experts.

And maybe use the word "Novice" for the other forum since that sound less "offensive"

Yeah sounds like a good idea I'm a begginer at spriting and I agree with the proving perhaps you can only post in the expert section if your posts in the begginers section are of above average quality

I'm glad you agree! This decision is for the purpose of bettering yourself as a spriter without being hassled by some of the experts.

RE: Seperating beginners from the rest.
You guys could make a list with examples of typical bad sprites (Glaring colors, head swaps, mixzed bittages and subpixelated details) and add a little explanation to every one to explain why these sprites are bad, why the beginners should avoid them, and all that.

Also, you should add a list of the most used excuses to make newcomers understand how silly they sound and that instead of wasting time with excuses and flames, they should just keep practicing until they get it right.

And finally, you could forbid anyone who is not a "good" spriter to go and give useless "advice" to the newcomers: God knows how many attention seekers go around every community posing as "wise" and "veterans" when everything they do is merely steal and parrot the words of the true spriters present around. You guys have quite the number of good spriters here, and if they could share their experience without being interrupted or parroted, the newcomers could learn and improve way better and faster than as now.

That would be considered rather patronising to others who aren't up to decent standard.

I mean, you have a trophy for a sprite competition in your status information. Don't take the piss.

RE: Seperating beginners from the rest.
I think in the tutorials section of the site once it comes out I'll make a tutorial on what not to do and say, with a list of common excuses and examples of bad sprites.

[Image: szQ0awf.gif] Dave Matthews Band - Grey Street [Image: szQ0awf.gif]
Oh look at how she listens... She says nothing of what she thinks.
She just goes stumbling through her memories staring out onto Grey Street.
But she thinks, "Hey... How did I come to this? I dreamed myself a million times around the world but I can't get out of this place."
There's an emptiness inside her and she'd do anything to fill it in.
And though its red blood bleeding from her now, it felt like cold blue ice in her heart.
When all the colors mix together to grey, and it breaks her heart...

How she wishes it was different... She prays to God almost every night.
And though she swears He doesn't listen, there's a hope in her that he just might.
She says "I pray! Oh, but they fall on deaf ears... Am I supposed to take it on myself to get out of this place?"

RE: Seperating beginners from the rest.
You might want to consider a way to bring a little more attention to the tutorial page then. Maybe a "featured tutorial" or something? Though, there might not be enough support with the tutorials as they aren't exactly flowing in like a flood.
