I had always wondered why people don't submit DS textures very often.

For the Icon, you could just pick a picture of a character himself.

Yeah, you'll want an in-game screenshot of one of the character's faces rather than the actual textures for the icon.
It's not mandatory, but it looks so much better.

Oh, then... um.. what if I can't find a close up picture of one of the characters?..

Well, if you can't find official art of the characters, then you (this is what I do anyway) can take a screenshot of their face in-game.
Either that or use any face icons you can find (like how Pokémon Colosseum does it). Hope that helps!

BTW, I chose Characters instead because it is being placed in the textures resource so it would be obvious if they were textures

Although, I must ask, I noticed that the background is black, and the textures seem to have black showing through them... do they perhaps require transparency?

I don't think DS games would use transparency. But still, would it really be a problem? Anyone can easily make an alpha map for them.
