RE: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Even though the story line is most of the time the same, Mario games have that touch of making their games fun. I think this game will have more than just a touch...Tongue

(04-22-2012 04:43 AM)Kriven Wrote:  What's wrong with the same gameplay? The only problem I have with the NSMB series post DS is the flat graphics, but I don't really see why it's so terrible to continue using gameplay that has proven popular and fun.

this might have been touched on before but, what is wrong with building upon the game play to make it seem, ya know. Different?

lets go back to the thing about SMB->SMB2(both japan and USA games)->SMB3->SMW thing

now when you look at the first two games they really aren't that different from each other. now this actually might have been acceptable at the time since Mario was just starting to get his own series. The only things different from the first one and the second one that came out in japan was an increase in difficulty and a few new things they threw in. I'm not going to touch upon SMB2USA much since that wasn't originally a mario game but I think it should be worth pointing out that since most people recognize it as a mario game it was drastically different from the original super mario bros and it seemed like nintendo actually built upon the original game formula and Shigeru probably realized he should build upon his games and thus we got SMB3.

Now heres where SMB3 separated itself from the last two. It actually built upon the original games, gave a complete overhaul to the graphics, and it also bothered to throw in so much content in your face that you could tell it was a completely different game from the original. This is a real sequel and not just some dumb expansion pack like the Japanese SMB2. You had so many new power ups to play with and you had drastically different levels, and a lot of the game play was significantly built upon that didn't look like the ones from the first two games.

SMW also built upon that, this time, they added in yoshi, gave mario new abilities (like spin jumping) and changed up the formula a bit to take advantage of the SNES's power. True, it may have not had as much levels as SMB3 did but you have to admit one thing. It definitely has proven that you don't need more levels and shit to prove that it's a good game. It had so much replay value just from it's gameplay alone.

When you look at the NSMB for the DS you get the idea that nintendo wanted to go back to the old school formula. Which was great at the time and it actually was, well fun. Then NSMBWii came out and it didn't really build on the NSMBDS one, but it certainly proved itself a decent single despite being another expansion pack and now this. Which right now seems like a straight out obvious expansion pack.

Like I said before, NSMB2 as of right now looks almost like the exact same thing with spinkles and whip cream on top of the ice cream.

Anyway I'm sure they'll reveal something that will make me need this game.

I was meh with NSMBW, but when they showed the Koopalings, I had to get it!

It's a cheap trick, but it work on my fanboyish instincts.

RE: New Super Mario Bros. 2
I'm kinda expecting some levels to use layer jumping, like what Nintendo wanted to do with the VB Mario title.

Based on this:

THeir reasoning of this is rather weak I know, but the concept seems to make sense when you consider that the 3D would work well with it.

Yeah, that seems pretty likely. Not exactly anything new, though, Nintendo's already used that idea in the 2nd Paper Mario, and the newest Donkey Kong Country, and probably a few other games.

Thats not really the point I was getting at. It's more so that, if this is the case, then this game isn't a flat out rehash or anything. Granted, this all depends on whether or not it is the case. Plus, it would be a first for a Mario platformer if I'm not mistaken (VB aside).

It's Nintendo. It's Mario. Rehash or not, it's going to be good and it's going to be old fashioned Mario fun. Really there's nothing else to it.

RE: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Even if the gameplay's pretty good, if it doesn't have any personality then I'm not having fun. Especially if the gameplay isn't particularly new or exciting.

There's plenty of other run and jump games to choose from that are actually interesting. I keep skipping out on Nintendo products lately because they just look boring and generic. I mean Nintendo has its own brand of personality, I guess, but they don't seem to be doing anything with it lately. It's like the most bare-bones version of Nintendo possible, with none of its usual charming details.

I dunno if I'm being too harsh because, y'know, I keep skipping out on Nintendo products lately, so I haven't played them all. And yes, there have been recent exceptions. But with NSMB specifically, the first one was dull and lifeless, so I'd rather not waste my time on a sequel.

Honestly, I thought and still think that NSMB was a great, personality-infested game.

It was NSMBWii that was... dead.

RE: New Super Mario Bros. 2
the thing is, the places and elements are overused. I for one don't really mind, but I can really see people frowning upon the art style found in those Mario games. the bolted panels, the smooth wooden surfaces, plasticky environment, to point a few things.

Those do feel kind of... default, there is no real personality in them, it's as if you were guiding Mario in a bunch of floating toys. A more 'serious' (?) tone would work better: forests with bushes, rocky cliffs, etc etc. (this is coming from a person who didn't play newer games other than NSMB, so I might've probably said bullshit there, but I think that my point can be understood).

Your jealousy is the speed of my success.

RE: New Super Mario Bros. 2
When I played Super Mario Sunshine, I thought the series was really progressing. Isle Delfino felt like a real place, with homes and people!
On top of that, each area had a story arc, seeing how your good deeds effect the area and people living there was awesome.

I was very sad to see Galaxy had these weird floating fakey worlds. The characters had no life, they were just sign posts.

Don't take this the wrong way, I loved the game! I think it's one of the best Mario games ever! But... it felt like someone stepped in and decided to kill all the life *cough*Miyamoto*cough* and just focus on getting to the end of an obstacle course. And that's fine but... Sunshine spoiled me, I can't look at a new Mario game without thinking, "this world is nothing like Delfino!"

RE: New Super Mario Bros. 2
Honestly, Nintendo could keep using the default worlds if they'd simply think about what these worlds could offer. To give a better example: The water world. What is it usually? A few underwater levels, a few beach levels, the end. Why not throw a level on a ship in the mix (not a doomship, but a cargo ship in the ocean), or a light house that you have to climb up through the inside. Seriously, the current basic worlds have a LOT of potential, but admittedly, Nintendo likes to play it safe.
