The tale of Green Love

I remember a time when the village was a peaceful place. A time when all knew one another. A time when there was no care of the outside world. A time when you had no fear of dying.

A time before he arrived.

We carelessly welcomed him with open arms. He barely seemed to speak a word of English, only whispering quiet greetings and random mumblings of what seemed German as he scuttled about the village to find a home. Once he settled in, we saw him, at most, once every two months.


That stare. That menacing grimace... it makes me shudder every time it crosses my mind. Two steel bullets that some would call eyes, piercing through my conscious. An impish snout, sharper and pointier than Lucifer's blade. Long, silky, greasy jaded locks of hair that flow as if they are a window peering into the very River of Styx.

But we didn't see this at the time. All we saw was a pathetic little rat of a human being. The children quickly started telling jokes about the mysterious man in the green get-up, and adults began to grow curious.

One gloomy and rainy afternoon, I was working a job in the local museum. I can remember it all precisely. At 4:13 PM, a foggy shadow slowly crept through the front doors. I immediately ducked under the reception desk but kept my eyes open... it was him. It was the green man.


He was holding a rather large inscription on a tablet of linen paper. On it I witnessed several symbols I can remember distinctly, but to this day I still remain clueless to what they could mean...

The following week, I caught vision of the very same work the green man was carrying - it was vividly and noticeably framed in the main chamber of the museum. My curiosity continued to spark in greater and greater capacities.

I knew at that moment what I was to do. The time had come to investigate.

I woke myself from my slumber at precisely 12:00 AM that night. I unlocked the museum doors and closely examined the artwork. Clearly this was not a remarkable work - in fact, some of the strange symbols resembled the genitals of the friendly African man who visited our village for food a few years ago, and I couldn't help but chuckle. What could have convinced the curator to display such a ridiculous piece in our elegant museum?

The most peculiar part of the picture was the replica of the green man himself. It was written explicitly on the tablet that this self portrait, above all else, was NOT to be used. Such a crude scribble created by a seemingly quiet man such as this fellow could easily be stolen without any harm done, I thought to myself.

I thought.

I cut out the outline of the "green guy" and brought it back home with me. I decided to examine the picture some more tomorrow.

The next morning I awakened with blurred vision and unfamiliar surroundings. As my vision returned to me, I was shocked. I couldn't move. I was painted green. I was breathing through a tube in a hospital bed. I was no longer a man, either - but the doctors told me they weren't sure what gender I had become.

I was forced to live in the hospital under medical care for 13 years, and even now I can only transport myself by walking on my left arm.

If only I didn't use the green guy.

Why? Why the fuck did I use the green guy?
