I suggest darkening the pallete a bit further, or reversing it a bit so he's white with angel wings to diffrenate him from the copyrighted version.

I thought there was a rule against using copyrighted characters (including edited ones) as references, and yet literally everyone gets away with it except for one particular person.

I honestly don't understand why that one person is singled out on this issue.

I don't think we have any rules about personal characters, no.

Thing is, a personal personal character is always preferred. However, for some people, we know that there's no use in telling them to be more creative. Still, we kinda succeeded in your case, Mighty, and we try it in John's case. That's all!

Yeah, technically nothing avoids you from having a copyrighted character as your ref, but that makes you 'less unique', the exact opposite of a personal character is supposed to do. Not to say it sticks out too much like a sore thumb when placed along with other, original personal characters.

the fact is that since we're a creative community, we get ways around copyrighted characters and the original poster ends up getting a decent personal character. See mighy's case for example. Mighty's ref was originally Mighty Bomberman, but we avoided drawing him because it wasnt creative at all. Then we started characteristics such as mouth, dress etc. to differentiate her more from the base char and make it more interesting.

so I believe John will have a non-bub personal character soon.

I just wanted to bring it up again because it was still bugging me to this day.

I just would have rather used my OC Mithy character than Mossy but everyone called him just an edit, and wanted me to either use an entirely original OC, or my "blanket ref." (for lack of better term) girl Bomberman (who is in fact a Mighty edit, remember my first pieces of love when it was Mighty with a bow on his cape and kawaii-desu eyes?) that I wasn't fond of, mostly because I didn't want a girl character as my ref., however I am okay with her and I love and appreciate any and all love I get, so don't take this as me hating on the girl Mighty character (also, I know that A.J. Nitro for example submitted a Blue Shy Guy with headphones as his ref. so...).

I completely understand about being creative too, it's just I'd also love some art of my bad dude character on occasion too is all, if no one minds (I don't mean to be picky but...), because I love him as well.

I actually have been meaning to post one of my original characters that I have for Love purposes (even though I'd still keep the name most likely). Really I don't see THAT big a deal with someone wanting Love of a pre-existing character though. Some people like a character so much that they'd love to see other interpretations of that character.

Also everyone SHOULD give a shit about Clash at Demonhead. ;~;

Yes, I feel this way too. This was one reason I wanted Mighty as my reference, but, he turned into the girl Bomberman, so I changed it. XD
