RE: Sprite Ripping Project 4: 2-D Fighting Games
I managed to turn Clayfighter's black BG to pink in Zsnes:

Unfortunately, there are graphical errors on the characters, when they are in motion. If you still want to give it a try, i will describe my method to change the Background. You'll need vSnes and a Hex Editor for this.

1. Open the Savegame.zst in Vsnes.

2. Click on "Hex Editor" in the vSnes-Toolbar. Click on "CGRAM".

3. The first Value is the Background-Color. If it's black, it will be "00 00". Look at some of the color-values next to it and note them down.

4. Open the Savestate in a Hex Editor (Note: I know, vSnes already has a built-in Hex Editor, but it didn't let me save the changes).

5. Now we want to look for the color-data. Since we can't search for "00 00" (too many), look for the aforementioned Numbers until you see the same pattern as before (for example "00 00 B2 35 73 4E" etc.) and change "00 00" to "1F 7C". Save the changes and test it.

I hope, this was comprehensible. I don't guarantee, that this works for every game, however, it worked for me.
