I would desaturate it and make the motion blur less lazy. I think that would match it up enough.

When I get back into it, he should be easier to rework, since I almost finished the old sheet, and I won't have to refer to video as often.

If anything you'd need to make them translucient in the game, otherwise they'd look like he's shooting out slurpee

I know his stomach needs more shading, I fixed that, just trying some other stuff out before I post it

...Also, I thought the shading on the head was more or less fine. Maybe you could do an edit...

Edit:

Tried some different shading on the head, and changed the colors on Squirtle's stomach to use the Yellow from Koopaul's Bowser:



the 3 Different heads are the ones above Mario (I forgot to mark each head 'A,B & C,' but it's from left to right):
A. The Original
B. Slightly more shading under the eye
C. Highlighted upper lip
