RE: Doodles and Finished Pieces.
Try to break the figure into large, solid shapes of tone, rather than thinking too much about the contour. Use the edge of the charcoal to block in large areas.
If the edges of the form are tonally sort of similar to the background, throw in some colour or another tone in the negative space.

Also, don't be afraid to let the paper show through! Working on tinted paper means you basically already have a midtone; use that as your base, blocking the core shadow in with charcoal and only adding subtle highlights with the chalk.

Also I can't say for certain without seeing the model, but it looks to me like you're idealising the figure somewhat. This sounds obvious, but draw what you actually see, don't allow yourself to rest too heavily on assumptions about what body parts "should" look like.

where does it seem like that? the breasts are relatively accurate; they were fairly modest in size and also very free (she had apparently had a breast reduction earlier in her life as well). If anything, she's a little thinner than how I drew her, with somewhat longer legs. and a smaller head. i kinda goofed the proportions a bit.

Quote:Try to break the figure into large, solid shapes of tone, rather than thinking too much about the contour
I think I did that in a few of the other ones, but in this particular one the teacher asked us to think about the contour of the body. I don't have access to the rest of them right now, but I'll upload some of them when I do~

RE: Doodles and Finished Pieces.
It's mostly the shape of the breasts rather than the size
I mean, not saying it's impossible, but they're of a shape that's a lot less common than TV would lead you to believe :V
If she's had a reduction then I take it back, though! In a reduction a surgeon will usually aim for a pretty idealised shape, for obvious reasons. Pardon my assumption then c:

Also yeah, getting proportions right when you can't see the head very well is a huge pain, since there's not a whole lot else that's particularly practical to use as a measurement

Charcoal isn't super good for contours; I tend to use a fairly hard pencil or a pen for linework personally, since they tend to be more precise. Charcoal's a pretty fast medium that doesn't lend itself very well to accuracy!
You could try using compressed charcoal or a charcoal pencil if you still want it to be fairly movable but want greater precision c:
OH
and if you don't already have one, invest in a putty eraser. They're a lifesaver when you're working with charcoal or chalk, seriously.

The one in the middle looks like a Na'Vi.

You can't unsee it.

yeah, it's kind of an overdone shape. i tend to try and avoid those kinds of shapes (plus i prefer the more natural/slightly sagged look anyway (my exes were like that, v.big + with some sag)), but it was kind of unavoidable here, heh.

i actually did have one for a little bit! i dont remember if this is one of the ones i used it on, though. after a few poses i lost it so i couldn't use it anymore. :C

I dunno, I like those blocked-in noses, the size makes them more 'expressive'~

Specs 'n' Headphones has been revamped! Check it, yo.

RE: Doodles and Finished Pieces.
I used to REALLY HATE the muppet nose thing in some people's drawings, but for some reason the style's growing on me recently.

I don't think I'm really going to make it a permanent part of my work apart from in cases where someone has a really prominent nose, though. It's difficult to make it work unless you're using full-colour, I think.

I dunno, I'm just sort of dicking around with different ways to draw the face and seeing what sticks. I'm kind of re-learning to draw, starting with the head and working my way down with a mixture of Loomis and cartooning books c:

RE: Doodles and Finished Pieces.
i've only recently just realized that the "muppet nose" has come up a bit more in people's art. mine, too, i guess.
i wonder where we got it. i probably saw it on nedroid first.

RE: Doodles and Finished Pieces.
Ok this is a WIP obviously, but I really want to make my next collage based on stamps, because I used to collect them when I was 9 and 10. I want to make it a human heart with a bunch of stamps, and then a blue artery coming out of the heart with the text "common sense" and an arrow pointing outwards. There will also be a vein going into the heart with the words "stupidity" with an arrow going in. The title is "The Mechanics of Love". Everything will be made out of stamps, and here is the heart, the stamps are not stuck on so give me some constructive criticsm. Thanks.

Dunno if Flipnote crap belongs in here but they don't really deserve a thread of their own:
