i think i've said before but the whole point of these rips is not only to hold them as fodder for flash animations, but as some sort of digital museum as well.

Looking at Dazz's posts it reminds me when Bacon used to runs things. We mostly made Customs sprites then. A lot of them did it based on what they needed for their Sprite Comics and Flash Animations. Yeah we weren't ashamed to do those things! "What? There's no Sheik sprites?" and we'd get to work!

There was motivation!

Slowly but surely people stopped making Customs, because people stopped making Sprite Comics and stuff. Then it was all about rips. I never respected rips like Customs. To me, Customs showed true talent and they were often made with purpose. Now when I see rips most of the time they are things I can't image someone using.

Who the hell is going to use these?

Ahem anyway, I hope the changes around here might bring a Customs revolution!

the only correct part of this is that customs are better effort-wise

but see viper and CO2's post to see what I think too.

not to say most the customs from that time were shitty as hell. For example Cironus' sprites or those Starfox people with Megaman bodies

Your jealousy is the speed of my success.

RE: the good and old TSR Lounge topic
Though I signed up in May '09, I came here in early '06 for sprites to make a Mario mod for Civ II (which is kinda really dumb, but...!)

I used Google Images and found a bunch of sites, mostly "that dark blue one" and "this light pink one"

RE: the good and old TSR Lounge topic
i posted a lot of my sprites on the planet mega man forum and then my friend wiryamii // polar koala told me about this cool place with spriters on it and sent me to pixeltendo and told me that i was like, already better than most of the members there. and then i remember bean and fossil being like WOW COOL SPRITES GUY.

the site never had anything to do with it for me.

this

if we took a 2d game from each series (Bowser's Inside Story for Mario, Minish Cap for Zelda, HeartGold/SoulSilver for Pokemon, you get the idea) and had sprite projects to draw as many characters from that series in that series' style then that might be useful

but the likelihood of that working out would be pretty slim so why even bother?

RE: the good and old TSR Lounge topic
Well there are sheets like Superstar Saga Wario or Legend of Princess Travis,

but yes, most of the spriters on this site either are lazy, have a real life, or are professional spriters that wouldn't waste time on fansprites

just like I wouldn't waste time on fangames!
that's not to say fansprites or fangames are bad, but when it's your craft why make those when you can make resume pieces/money?

RE: the good and old TSR Lounge topic
Great, now I'm in that rant-about-tSR mood:

The thing is, almost all of the "good spriters" are at that age where they have to or nearing the age where they have to to earn a living. Some, like Tyvon, as a pixel artist. Others as whatever else. And even then Tyvon doesn't post custom sprites from other people's IP nearly as much as he does his own IP to show to potential contract employers.

Now when a new member posts something that sucks we rip him to shreds, forgetting that we were him once. Occasionally a new member will post something good and we give him a pat on the back and say "welcome to tSR", but why are we being so selective? Instead of ripping the guy whose art sucks to shreds with harsh criticism and defending our assholery with "I ain't sugarcoating shit" why don't we give him help edits, show him examples in other sprites, or tell him exactly what the problem is and even how to fix it.

If we keep being so fucking selective we'll kill tSR. Remember Pixeltendo? Remember when we sucked at spriting? Imagine what would happen if we were bashed to hell and back and stopped returning. Then imagine what would've happened after the good spriters of PT left. There would be no tSR. Now fast-forward to now. We bashed the new guys to hell and back and some of the good spriters aren't as regular as they used to be (see Tyvon's leaving threads, Dex's leaving threads, how often BAB is on, the long break JarJar had, how often Chad is on, etc.). We are destroying the next generation of tSR.

tl;dr: We should make an effort to help new spriters who are very new to this, maybe even make an open sprite project (which would also help with tSR's custom section) with an easier style for beginners to learn, like how I did this.
dammit koopaul what have you done to me?!?!

Crits dont even get assholish until the spriter starts disregarding everything except buttpats though, and that happens whether they're good or bad at it.
