So with valves latest update/patch whatever to TF2, it now crashes when I try and pick a side.

Yeah, it works for me now without the crash.
From about whenever they applied the patch two days ago to some time last night, it crashed and I had to put the model count on low for it to work. But that's fixed now.

Okay, so there have been a TON of promotional items coming in over the past few days.
Neglecting to mention the Grordbort stuff, we've gotten hats from Red Orchestra, a hat from From Dust, and
well
Brink, Skyrim, Quake 1, and RAGE all have promotional items as of last update.
Sniper gets a Brink-styled hood and veil, Heavy gets a generic Skyrim helmet, Soldier gets his original rocket launcher (as in the Quake rocket launcher, as in the same rocket launcher that the Soldier used when TF was a Quake mod), and the Engineer gets a boomerang misc item, in that order of promotion.
Neglecting to also mention the Pip Boy the Engineer's getting as well.

Only promo that was deserving enough to get into TF2 was The Original, anyway
Valve needs to release more TFC-related items.
